CALIFORNIA \ SANTA BARBARA

Caparone Santa Maria Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Our cabernet comes from the well-known Bien Nacido Vineyard, located in Sisquoc, in the Santa Maria Valley. Our cab from this vineyard is classic cool-climate cabernet - dark, intense, with a slight smokiness that is unique to Bien Nacido. The grapes were grown in sandy soil next to the Sisquoc River.

This wine is capable of aging for many years - Dave's 1974 cabernet, from the same valley, is still aging gracefully today. We have used this particular block since 1984, and the wines from it have demonstrated great longevity and consistent quality. We avoid excessive oak and alcohol; our cabernet is an unembellished expression of this exceptional vineyard.

Caparone Santa Maria Valley Merlot

From P-Block of Bien Nacido Vineyard, our merlot is full bodied and intense, much like the great merlots of Pomerol.

It is extremely dark in color, with subdued blackberry fruit and a long finish. We have always made it in this style - we do not believe in wimpy merlots! We have produced merlot since 1980, and have used this block every year since 1984.

Grown in clay loam, the wine has the characteristic Bien Nacido smokiness, with concentrated fruit and enough tannins to age for many years. It is quite different from most California merlots.

Caparone Paso Robles Sangiovese

Our planting of sangiovese grosso was established in 1982, using cuttings from a very well known producer of Brunello di Montalcino.

The warm days and cool evenings at our San Marcos Road vineyard site are very well suited to the grape; full maturity is possible every year. The combination of climate and soil produces a sangiovese with excellent balance, complexity and varietal character. Our sangiovese is unblended, it has a (correct) apple red color, intense floral aroma concentrated fruit and spice flavors, and great longevity in the bottle.
